Stories from our Kitchen Table

The Client Who Never Said a Word

Over the years, we've met some fascinating people, but one client stands out for a very unusual reason.

Many years ago, we received a referral to help a gentleman from Toronto's west end find a home.

When we picked him up, he smiled, handed us a handwritten note, and waited.

The note simply explained that he was a monk who had taken a vow of silence.

Well... this was going to be interesting!

We climbed into the car and headed toward Oshawa. As we drove, Bonnie and I asked questions about what he was looking for in a home. Instead of answering, he would quietly write his responses on small pieces of paper and hand them to us.

For the next six hours—three hours driving and three hours touring homes—that's how we communicated.

We showed him house after house, but nothing seemed quite right. He was kind, thoughtful, and incredibly patient. We just couldn't find the home he was looking for.

At the end of the day, we drove him back to Toronto. He thanked us with a warm smile, another handwritten note... and that was the last we ever heard from him.

Some clients become lifelong friends.

Some become wonderful memories.

And some leave you with one of the most unique stories you'll ever tell around the kitchen table.

P.S. One thing I do remember... we generated a lot of recycling that day from all those little notes! 😊
